A Rhode Island Fourth of July Weekend
Saturday - Indie Art Festival by the Sea at Fort Adams (Newport, RI)
In an act of spontaneity (my favorite kind of act), I found myself making the trek out to Newport for the second Saturday in a row, this time with Robin, Matt, & the gang. Taking the 60 Ripta on a beautiful Saturday afternoon turned into a bit of a bumpy ride with half the bus being filled with Summer@Brown high school students (and that was only the ride there, the ride back was a whole other tale). Making our way to the Gateway Visitors' Center, we somehow came to the conclusion that walking the 3.2 mi to Fort Adams would be the most cost-effective method of getting to the festival.

We felt a little bit silly, and quite a bit exhausted, when we reached Fort Adams and could see that the path that we had taken resembled that of a giant U--though we did feel accomplished for walking the whole way.
We came across some random things, mostly houses and gated properties, but this picture reminded me of my housemates:
As they would say, "PRIVILEGE"
The art festival was really fun, lots of cool and cooky kinds of things. Lots of handmade jewelry, t-shirts, decorations, accessories, even stuffed animals, and so much more. And I bought awesome earrings!
Props to Sonia for realizing right away that these earrings reminded me of the ones I left behind in Chinatown.
Opting for the water taxi, we made it back to the main area of Newport and ate at Red Parrot...yay seafood! I had Crab Stuffed Island Shrimp--delightfully light, baked crab cake on top of giant shrimp and drizzled with a surprisingly sweet coconut-like sauce.
The bus ride home was pretty ridiculous, we couldn't get on the first bus because there were too many people trying to get on (geez summer@Brown kids). And the second but had all the elements of a great urban tale, fully crowded, drunken/drugged up man who peed on the bus, the police, eavesdropping on conversations between strangers. But all in all, a wonderful day with lots of different adventures. Definitely a great way to kick off an Independence Day weekend.
