Spontaneous Santa Barbara Adventures

9.1.13

I started off September with a beautiful day trip of an adventures. One of my college buddies and I didn't have plans for Labor Day Weekend, and so we drove to one of the nearest places to LA without actually being in LA anymore...the beautiful beachy town of Santa Barbara.

The weather was crazy-amazing, blue skies, warm but not humid, and bright. I couldn't get over how bright it was. The pictures were just so beautiful!

This is from the top of the Courthouse in the middle of downtown. This lookout is about 4 stories high, and nothing else in Santa Barbara can be built higher than this tower.
Our first stop was the mission, which I had never been to (at least from my memory). It really wasn't as pretty or ornate as the churches in Europe, but it does have its own charm.

For brunch we went to a restaurant called Fig & State, (on Figueroa and State streets!), and our waited commended us on ordering so simply...I guess those movie parodies of snooty people ordering something with a bajillion exceptions and substitutions is actually a reality? All I can say is this Fig French Toast was so fluffy and buttery and a tad sour because of the fig, if you're gonna order french toast, you may as well just go all the way with it ;).

This was the painted staircase inside the courthouse--just a minute or so after this pic was taken, a frazzled lady carrying a baby was rushing around, asking us if she had seen a wedding! Turns out it was her sister's wedding O_O and turns out it was just up these stairs! Super spontaneous, and super corny, but yes we did see the "You may now kiss the bride" part of the wedding :) it was such a great moment!

Probably the funniest surprise of the day was realizing that the beaches in Santa Barbara face...south east? And the sun was nowhere near the beach as it was setting. It looked really beautiful setting into the palm trees, and my favorite spontaneous moment was laying in the sand, looking up at the sky change from sunset to twilight to night stars. Totally and completely a day of spontaneous moments, and just the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of LA life. It kind of reminded me of my walk day explorations around Kobe and Osaka, except this time I had a friend and I do have to admit that makes exploring a bunch more fun :).
