Book World
This book, Beautiful Creatures, is one that I was supposed to have read over 2 years ago, way back when I was taking Adolescent Literature (that's my old blog with some of the books I read for that class) with my bestie Sonia. Our class even had a skype date with one of the authors, to which I remember simply just hanging back and not contributing to the discussion (surprise surprise). Anyway, I finally got around to reading it this past week...563 pages in a little under 3 days!
I love how young adult novels are so packed with descriptions and imagery and coming of age and flawed characters and magic and nonsense and everything. Think Twilight with witches instead of vampires and taking place in South Carolina instead of Washington state. I must say though, I'm kind of glad I hadn't read the book before we talked to the author because well...there were just so many "uh, really?" moments that I might have offended her. The world they created was beautiful, having flashbacks between the present day and the Civil War...but the way the people were characterized, it just didn't feel so real, or so relateable. The tragic overwhelming love that fills up the main characters kind of just made me roll my eyes at how young it all seemed. And this is coming from me, the hopeful romantic sap.
Okay yeah, you definitely cared about what happened to these two (obviously I did, reading it so quickly), but I think maybe these 16 year old young lovers were just TOO...good? Not in the good-naughty way, but in the...they always did the right things, felt the right things, they didn't do anything wrong basically. The major executors of conflict occur from outside forces, and so the main characters are always the victims or the heroes...I dunno, I guess I just wanted them to make some screw ups as well, instead of just running away or against all the evil.
Phew, that's all I'll write about for now. I'm so glad that my Amazon shipment already came so I can start on my next adventure. ^_^ now if only I had a library card, and a library with English books...or a librarian that would be willing to order English books... *ponders
